The Lawnmower Lady

I like fixing small engines. Basic maintenance to advanced repair tutorials.
I started years ago working on antique motor scooters, Vespa, Lambretta. One thing led to another, friends and family asked my help on lawn mowers and small engine repairs. 15 years or so later...
My wish is I can empower you: the DIYer, the homeowner, yes - even all you gals out there to understand and even fix your own small engines. Even if you don't know what end of the screwdriver to hold, you can possess enough knowledge to ask the right questions when you do take your lawn equipment into another repair shop.
I feel this is so important, as we have become a throwaway society. Many USA manufacturers have gone overseas for production. Materials and craftsmanship are inferior than they were even ten years ago. If you take care of that older mower, it stays out of the landfill. That older one will outlast most any new mower from the big box stores today.
Most of all, I enjoy helping people. Mow Happy!

This is fantastic. Thank you.
How do I get the primer bulb off my Briggs and Stratton 450E so I can replace it?
Thank you for the great video! I was just about to toss my lawnmower in the trash until I did this. This was a Father's Day gift from my boys. Ran out of gas, put in clean gas, and then it died. The only thing I would be careful with is the float metal rod, it falls off easily if you remove it. Thanks again!
thank you for this video. I honestly thought I got a used makita for the reason you described! I feel better
Ummm, well that carb was in horrible shape. I bet the bowl was a total mess. It was gonna die seconds after video cut off. That carb needed complete disassembly and cleaning. Goodness!
Great work! Your explanation in each process helped alot! I have a little 170 that I pair with my 261. They are pretty good little saws for what they are.
Great to hear!
❤
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Thank you for the excellent video. Exactly what I was looking for
Glad it was helpful!
Couldn't you just disconnect the fuel line from the carb and drain it that way
Yes, that is a way to do it as well.
I was told to use a pre-filter over the air filter. And just learned that it's good to oil the pre filter as well. What do you think?
I've never oiled a pre-filter, buy honestly have not looked up what the OM says. I see so few with that pre-filter.
@@TheLawnmowerLady thank you!
I'm using a different model (Personal Pace AWD) with two belts, but only the front drive suddenly stopped working. I'm going to attempt repair tomorrow morning. However, another guy I asked said those three keeper screws are TORX (star point) rather than Robertson (square point). Does Toro change up screws like that between similar models? Or is that other guy mistaken?
It could be either one. Manufacturers change up lots of parts for seemingly no apparent reason to public.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanky kindly 🙂
My hrr 216 is slightly different. I did have to remove the housing to be able to rotate the trans to proceed my unit has individual rear wheel adjustments and I adjusted the wheel nearest the trans for extra space. When I was done and placed the unit on the ground the rear wheels will not adjust evenly one has to be set higher 2 spaces higher to be even. Prior to the belt change there was no issue. Any ideas. Also, I did remove the spring but re attached it. Tx
Hmmm. That sounds like a mystery to me.
Thank you for the ideas. I only wish I had curbs.
You can do it!
I just want to thank you so much! u probably just saved me $150. SWF and I try and fix everything I can within reason. My troybilt wouldn't start and after I did everything on the video it started. Your the best! Kim
Happy to help. Cheers!
Thanks that was very interesting to me because I have a 6.75 Quantum on a Snapper purchased in 2004 that was fitted with a different version of this carb that doesn't have the choke, but has some sort of a purge bulb primer system. Has a history of being difficult to start and restart since it was new and I used to think about trying to revert to the choke carb but wouldn't know if it was feasible but it was nice to see what it looks like. I guess they made this change for emissions reasons....who knows.
Indeed, there are multiple versions of engines, carb, body combinations. Some due to manufacturing turnover. Once they develop a new/better product, they insert it into production without any fanfare. I appreciate you watching.
@@TheLawnmowerLady I just checked my Briggs & Stratton Flat Head service manual, which is very generalized, but I have the "LMS Flo-Jet" with fixed main jet, no adjustment needle for idle mixture, and no choke but what they call a "dry bulb primer system". They say it is non adjustable for low emissions. I guess when they stop working and can't be fixed they put out lower emissions in the landfill too lol. As an aside, when I brought this mower home from the store, it wouldn't start worth a damn and I eventually took off the flywheel and found the armature gap was super open on one end so it was not installed/adjusted properly at the factory.
I must say I did like your video but, Yes there is a but Sorry. If you look back on the disassembly and the reassembly you reversed the position of the governor spring and the throttle cable. Does that make a difference? Im following right now but I'm going to reassemble the original way and if that doesn't work I'll reverse them. If im wrong please correct my ignorance. 3:58 and 17:28 timelines
Yikes! Yes put it back the way you found it. Generally speaking that governor arm linkage will not fit in the smaller hole. Clearly this one did. The only real issue is added spring tension where it comes in contact with that linkage arm. I suspect the RPM changes might be delayed maybe a second or two slower with that added friction.
I tried this fix on our neighbors Toro 22" Recycler, but it didn't work. It still starts then dies. Not sure what else to try; it runs fine if I spray carb cleaner into the carburetor so it seems like it must be a fuel delivery problem. Plenty of gas is getting through the fuel line to the carb. There was some debris in the gas when I drained the tank. Using fresh ethanol free gas did not help. It does have spark. Any other ideas about what to check? Should I try a fuel filter in the fuel line (a filter made for gravity feed engines), and re-clean the carb?
If there was debris in your fuel tank, probably carburetor clean best. I'd avoid carb spray, it's very harsh on plastic and rubber bits. Brake cleaner is much more forgiving. Did you completely disassemble the plastic fuel stack? Double check your carb bowl went back on the in the correct orientation.
@@TheLawnmowerLady The first carb clean went well, and I cleaned it again this morning. I cleaned the gas tank out this morning; maybe there was something that made it to the carb after the first cleaning that was dislodged during the 2nd carb cleaning? The good news is it is running now. There was a gasket missing from the fuel cap, which is now replaced, so hopefully there won't be debris getting into the gas tank now.
Lose the low Flashpoint gas as a cleaner and get a ultrasonic cleaner from harbor freight or solvent. I would have also asked the owner to show me the fuel can, 2 stroke oil being used, and mixing process. I use premixed fuel now. Did she check for spark? And finally these little motors do wear out. Topends, seals, crank rods, etc. flat wear out. And you can overoiil the air filter if it uses an oiled element.
Ty, I was wondering why my new mowers foam filter was covered in oil. Tried googling and wasn't getting immediate results.
Happy to help!
well done, good step by step instructions
Thanks for watching. Cheers!
Perfectly done.
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Excellent video. Thanks. MH
Glad it was helpful!
See this is what I want to see a regular person doing this stuff she isn't using anything that the everyday person doesn't have
I appreciate your observation. I try to make my videos accessible to the average homeowner that may not possess all the speciality tools that often make the job easier. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
With the float removed we see a shiny metal disk pressed into the plastic carburetor body. The disk in my carb had fallen out. What purpose does it serve? May I leave it out? If it must be installed how is that done so it won't fall out again?
That is a welch plug. Commonly used to block or restrict an internal passage. I've not looked under this plug in these particular carbs. Pretty sure you can purchase the part separately. Installs with a metal punch that slightly deforms the curve to seal up the passage. Lots of videos out there. If it runs poorly without the plug, you should replace it. I don't have a lot of luck reusing old plugs that have fallen out.
Looks like she needs to buy 50.1 premix fuel, to much lugging the engine and to much oil in gas 😮
This was awesome! I see what folks mean. The other YT'ers are clueless by comparison. Side note: I wonder if I can get an aftermarket metal carb?
I don't think so. These plastic carbs get a lot of bad press, but they really are very simple, very few parts. I think a lot of the hate out there is misdirected at other poor maintenance, like using a lot of carb spray... That's mighty harsh on plastic and rubber bits. I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
Great video. Thanks
I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
And still no gas line filter after 20+ years.
There is an inline filter in the fuel tank. It's on my HR215 from 1997.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Ok thanks. My 20 year old mower with the Honda 160 engine got plugged jets even when I use premium gas with Sea Foam. Hence my no filter comment.
@@woodchuck1946 That's likely more from bad, stale, ethanol laced fuel. Even with precautions, when fuel dries up, varnish like deposits accumulate.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Likely right. Not sure how fine the filter is in the tank.

You a the BEST gas mechanic! 😁👍💪 🔥🔥🔥
Wellll finally I found you! I love your clear methodical style and good information. I have had my arsenal of mowing yard Maint gear preserviced as usual this year. All four pieces of equipment have failed to run…after returns to two different shops, for different reasons and one was way overfilled with oil (why? Dunno) I am now assigned as my mechanic!🤣 I have sorted out multiple issues already…my zero turn supposedly needed a new solenoid, it turned out to be dirty contacts at the harness connectors, my push small self propelled mower would not start after three returns to the shop, both are now repaired and run like a champ with your help. my pressure washer just serviced will not crank after a recent service I am now in this one…and this is from two different shops🤣🤣Looking at the carbs I realized that most were not cleaned and two had damaged gaskets or seals 😳😂 I have a large piece of property, and yearly I have all my gear serviced pre season, pay attention to my fuel (stabilize) and check for water… Well I am setting up as I go now to have the parts and tools to do these service and repairs myself. I will even buy an ultrasonic cleaner…way cheaper than to pay for the services. And fun, somehow I like doing this, it is meditative. I have always four small engine tinkering fun. Thanks for your channel it is a game changer. Another new “Girl” mechanic here! Cheers!
I'm so very happy to help! I appreciate you watching. Cheers!
I squeeze the top lever way up on the top of the lawnmower push handle. It does not engage the throttle. Is there a spring or linkage missing? My customer's mower with this same carburetor (B&S 450e 125cc) I had replaced the needle and needle seat. Took out the atomizer assembly per your video here. Used guitar wire to clean out every hole and orifice then Put it all together. Everything is put back in place. Throttle linkage is properly attached to return spring but engine will not start unless I use starting fluid. Runs 3 seconds and dies.
The handlebar lever engages a brake pad on the flywheel at the same time it disconnects the kill wire. It really is not part of the throttle mechanism. I would be disassembling the carb again to ensure all the seals and o-rings are intact. Clearly there is a fuel delivery issue.
@@TheLawnmowerLady i found the problem! I ordered a float bowl needle. I put it in along with the viton rubber needle seat. (WRONG!) When I opened up the carb, there was not gasoline inside it. So you were right, it was a fuel delivery issue. I took out the rubber needle seat and put everything back together. Runs perfect after priming the carb via the primer bulb. I learned something from you, Thank you. A 66 yr. old dude in the Suburbs of Atlanta, Ga.
@@bassinbillRC5300 Happy to help. Cheers!
I recently replaced the drive belt using this great video. However, the transmission tension spring fell off along with the upper bracket plate that the spring attaches to on the mower housing. I am having trouble figuring out where the plate goes on the housing. Anyone know? Thanks
With the mower on its side, transmission up, you will find a slot. The dogleg of the bracket fits in, and the spring tension on the transmission ( when rotated around in its normal running position) keeps the bracket in place. Very difficult to see, you'll have to go by feel.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thank you. I found the slot and mowed my lawn today. I also realized you can see the dogleg of the bracket through the slit of the lever arm on the other side of the mower bed at about the number 2 adjustment. The slit is just large enough to wedge a screw driver to temporarily hold the bracket in place while reattaching the spring.
LOVE it.
Thx! Fixed my front issue in just seconds after watching this!!!
Glad it helped!
Used an indicator on mine, but thought you were going to give advice on how to straighten. Guess you'd figure to replace it. I used a long pipe on the shaft, pulled on it many times but got it really close. Thanks
I don't straighten cranks on machines that don't belong to me. I can't afford the liability.
Great video, I’m about to rebuild my carb. I do have a question someone messed with the high and low screws and now I don’t know exactly where they need to be. Any suggestions on how to start from scratch on those screws?
I'd start about 1.25 turns out.
Filter intrusive
These mowers must have the valves adjusted as part of their tune up. Without that, the mower will either stop, or not start. It's .006" on the intake, and .008" on the exhaust. The tune up is not complete without doing a valve adjustment. Everything else was spot on, except for the valve train tune up procedure, which is essential.
I have a toro tecumseh self pace mower 21inch new carb adjusted float new shut off cable..will start when primed then died runs a minute..what you think wrong
Air leak! I'm assuming you put on an aftermarket carb? They are hit and miss (as you might have discovered) I'd be cleaning and re-building the original carb.
Love for you to do my tune up! So through!!
Well I did do it! Unfortunately, the lawn mower still not running....
Hello, Love your video's. They are very informative. I have a Honda mower HRR2169VYA which has an automatic choke. It starts and runs fine, but when it warms up and the choke is off it dies when you engage the blades. While the choke is still on the blades engage fine and the engine runs fine. But when the choke comes off the engine stalls when the blades are engaged. I have cleaned the carb, changed the plug, replaced the fuel, checked the gas cap, but I cant figure out why it stalls when its warm. HELP !
I had a similar issue with my HR215 after about 8-10 years. I adjusted the cables to basically make the engagement earlier. Increasing the RPM didn't hurt either. Over time springs and cables stretch. Follow the governor arm return spring to it's termination point. Bend the bracket just a bit to put more pressure on the spring. Hope this helps.
Awesome!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
If you have time, you can get a new carb delivered for about twelve bucks on E Bay.
this mower has been nothing but problems for me. Fwd dies multiple times per year. Came broken out of the box! Just awful
Mine's been great!!
